Welcome to the home page of the parish church of East Hoathly, Sussex.
East Hoathly lies just off the A22 Croydon to Eastbourne road, about seven miles north-east of the county town of Lewes, fifty miles south of London, and twelve miles north of the English Channel. (We are “East Hoathly” to distinguish us from another Sussex village called West Hoathly, fifteen miles away near East Grinstead.) As well as East Hoathly village itself, the parish includes the smaller settlement of Halland, where the A22 crosses the A265 Lewes to Hawkhurst road.
The population of our parish is about 1,500.
Our parish forms a United Benefice with its sister parish of Chiddingly, so we share the Rector, the Rev. Phil Hodgins, who has been in post since 2004. Phil lives in the Rectory at East Hoathly. His phone number is (01825) 840270, and postal address is: The Rectory, East Hoathly, LEWES, East Sussex BN8 6EG.
East Hoathly Parish Church is in the middle of the village, just off the high street (signposted) down Church Marks Lane; the National Grid reference is TQ 520162. A car park is adjacent on one side, and the Rectory on the other.
Our main Sunday service is normally at 11 a.m. The type of service and times of other services vary depending on the Sunday in the month. The following chart shows the pattern for “ordinary” months. A recent innovation for the fourth Sunday is “TGI Sunday” – click the link to find out about this. At Christmas and Easter it is planned to include a link from this page to a separate page showing the special service arrangements.
|First Sunday||11 a.m.||Parish Communion (modern language)||Second Sunday||11 a.m.||Matins (traditional language)||Third Sunday||11 a.m.||Parish Communion (modern language)||6 p.m.||Evensong||Fourth Sunday||8 a.m.||Holy Communion (traditional language)||11 a.m.||TGI Sunday (very informal)||Fifth Sunday||10 a.m.||joint Benefice Communion
(1st & 3rd Fifth Sundays at East Hoathly;
2nd & 4th Fifth Sundays at Chiddingly)
Services in East Hoathly Parish Church are relaxed and friendly. Visitors and newcomers are very welcome. Our Church is fitted with the Loop System for use by the hard of hearing.
Apart from this home page, our site contains the following further pages:
At the foot of each of our other pages you will find a link back to this page.
Our Church plays a key role in village life, with our Rector regularly asked to say a few words to introduce events in the village which are not “Church events” as such. Scattered through this site you will find illustrations of various village activities.
Parishioners who spot mistakes in this website, or who have thoughts about additional material to be included, are warmly invited to get in touch either with the Rector or with the webmaster (e-mail address below, with the at-sign shown as “at” as a defence against spam robots).
Since our website is fairly new, it is pleasing to note that within six months of launch it was already receiving more than one visitor per hour on average (24 hours a day, seven days a week), from all over the world. Many of these will doubtless be casual, fleeting visits; but we hope that some of our online visitors may one day visit our church in person, and even that we might be able to welcome some of them to pray with us.
